Ghandi Romain wins third straight, scores KO1 in Philly

Welterweight prospect Ghandi Romain wasted no time in scoring his third straight victory, blasting Callan Harley to the canvas three times in the opening round to score a first round knockout victory on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Harrah’s Philadelphia in Chester, Pa.

The 26-year-old Romain (3-1, 3 knockouts) from Irvington, N.J. dropped the overmatched British fighter three times – all on right hands – before the fight was waived off by referee Charlie Fitch at the 2:14 mark.

“Honestly I didn’t see it coming that early. Of course I was confident in myself but you can never be overconfident in boxing. You have to train for every opponent like they’re a champion,” said Romain, who was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

“Once I saw signs of weakness in his game, that’s when I knew I could hurt him in the beginning.”

Romain has now won three straight since a freak loss in his pro debut last July, when he dropped Anthony Dill twice before being stopped on his feet.

Romain, who won the N.J. Golden Gloves and Diamond Gloves titles in 2017, will have a chance to show his hometown fans how he’s progressed when he returns to the ring on March 9 at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark. The Rising Star Promotions card will be headlined by a 10-round bantamweight fight between Emmanuel Rodriguez vs. Jesus Martinez, and will also include the ring return of Saleh “Habibi” Ali (1-0-1), the North Bergen-based featherweight who has been out of action since injuring his shoulder in a November 2022 win in Atlantic City.

“It feels amazing honestly, being able to showcase my talent near my city where it all started is really exciting yet humbling at the same time,” said Romain, who is trained by Wali Cooper and Nasir Graham, plus strength and conditioning coach Eddy Germaine Jr.

“I want to be someone that the city can be proud of so on March 9 I plan to display all my skills and represent proudly. I want the whole city in attendance.”

Fans interested in purchasing tickets directly from Romain can reach out to him through his Instagram page.
