New Jersey amateur boxing standouts Malachi Georges and Tyric Trapp both added another national title to their resumes, finishing first in their respective divisions at the Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Saturday, March 16.
Malachi Georges of Teaneck, N.J. won gold in the 203-pound division, while Trapp of Tinton Falls, N.J. finished first in the 176-pound division.
For Trapp, 23, the title is his second national, after he won the Summer Festival last June in Lubbock, Tex. Trapp began the tournament by stopping Victor Alcala before winning back-to-back unanimous decisions over Matthew Nore and Steven Colome to close out the championship.
“Winning the second national title feels amazing, knowing the amount of work that was put into this. I look forward to winning the state Golden Gloves and representing the state of New Jersey at the National Golden Gloves in Detroit,” said Trapp, who is rated no. 4 in the country by USA Boxing.
The 20-year-old Georges, who is coming off a camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, won unanimous decisions over Pablo Solis and Ben Turla to wrap up his title in dominant fashion.
“I’m just happy to let everyone know that nerds can be consistent champions too,” said Georges, the U.S. Olympic Trials champ who is rated no. 2 at 203 pounds by USA Boxing.
Georges is unopposed in the New Jersey Golden Gloves, while Trapp will have to face the winner of the semifinal bout between Troy O’Connor and Calvin Corbin at the Golden Gloves finals, which take place March 22-23 at Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, N.J.
