Sebastian Mazeneth beats NY champ Saidou Jalloh by decision in Long Island
PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — Bay Ridge amateur boxer Sebastian Mazeneth scored his third straight victory on Saturday, June 15, and built momentum heading into his first national tournament.
The 21-year-old Mazeneth defeated reigning Ring Masters champion Saidou Jalloh by split decision at Stereo Garden in Patchogue, Long Island, New York. The win makes Mazeneth the mandatory challenger for Strong Island Fight Night Series 147-pound champion Melquan Cisco of Long Island. That fight is scheduled for September 28 at the same venue.
Mazeneth appeared to knock down the Bronx based Jalloh with an uppercut in the third round but the referee ruled it a slip. Mazeneth was given credit for a standing eight count after hurting the 22-year-old from Harlem’s Mendez Boxing Club with a left hook, adding an exclamation mark to his performance.
It was a satisfying victory for the Barranquilla, Colombia born Mazeneth, who trains out of Brooklyn’s SweatBox Gym under Ryan Songalia and Argenis Arce, plus conditioning coach Aaron Watson. Mazeneth had to overcome the distractions of his opponent arriving to the weigh-in with less than five minutes remaining before the scales closed, and his opponent’s supporters cursing him out on the way to the ring.
“I was up against an opponent who many thought would beat me easily. He and his supporters in the crowd tried playing mind games and getting in my head before the fight but that didn’t deter me from going to work. In the ring I did what I do. I hunted him down for all three rounds and let my hands do my talking for me,” said Mazeneth, a senior at College of Staten Island who had been a star football player at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn.
“Getting the win and becoming number one contender for the Strong Island Fight Night Series belt feels amazing. I will be back in September to get that belt wrapped around me.”
Now Mazeneth turns his attention to the Summer Festival, which takes place from June 24-29 at the Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center in Wichita, Kansas. It will be Mazeneth’s first attempt at winning a national title, matching him up with the best boxers at his weight in the country.
