Malachi Georges bows out of World Championships quarterfinals

Malachi Georges’ inspiring run at the World Boxing Championships came to an end Wednesday, September 10 with a 5-0 unanimous decision loss to Brazil’s Isaias Filho in Liverpool, England.

The 22-year-old from Teaneck, New Jersey had made it to the 90-kilogram (198 pounds) quarterfinals after a pair of victories over opponents from Estonia and Hungary, in what was the biggest tournament he has competed in so far. Still, despite the verdict, Georges takes plenty of positives from the fight against the 23-year-old Brazilian, who had defeated Georges by a similar verdict in the gold medal match of the Grand Prix in June in the Czech Republic.

“In my opinion that’s a win in my book. I went untouched, I wasn’t getting hit with anything clean, I was hitting him with way cleaner punches but the judges see what they see. It is what it is. Loss on my record. I’ll just get better, no problem,” Georges told BoxingScene.

Georges is one of two New Jersey based boxers to represent USA Boxing at this tournament. Newark’s Ramon Ordonez competed in the 132-pound division, defeating Mexico’s Kevin Davila by unanimous decision before losing a 5-0 decision to Brazil’s Luiz Gabriel Oliveira on September 6.
