Team NJ goes 3-0 on second day of National Golden Gloves
Three up and three through: Jordan Simpson, Xavier Correa and Quazir McLeod are on to the quarterfinals.
The three New Jersey boxers competing Tuesday scored decision victories on Day 2 of the National Golden Gloves at Arvest Convention Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Simpson (165 pounds) scored a split decision over Nebraska’s Adonis Marcial, while Correa (143 pounds) scored a decision win over Chicago’s Angel Martinez while fighting for the second day in a row in the tournament.
Their True Warriors Boxing teammate McLeod, the state’s 121-pound representative, kicked off the action with a 4-1 decision over Kansas-Oklahoma’s Alvin Torres.
McLeod will be back in action tomorrow when he faces Chicago’s Michael Diaz-Mays, a 22-year-old with a record of 16-4 according to USA Boxing’s Matchtracker, and a two-time Chicago Golden Gloves champion. He will be joined by 198-pounder Dominic Lombardi, who will face Washington D.C.’s John Purnell, a 23-year-old resident of Newark, Delaware who has a 12-2 record.
Correa will once again be in action when he faces Iowa’s Fabian Harvey-McCuller in the quarterfinal round. Harvey-McCuller is relatively inexperienced compared to Correa but has managed wins over the Washington D.C. and Kansas-Oklahoma boxers.
Simpson will also fight a third straight day when he faces Jonathan Ramos, a 19-year-old from Casa Grande, Arizona whose modest 15-10 record belies the fact that he earned a silver medal at last year’s National Golden Gloves in the 154-pound division.
