Xavier Correa advances to semis, three NJ boxers fall
Xavier Correa is the last man standing for New Jersey after his three remaining teammates were eliminated Wednesday from the National Golden Gloves.
Correa advanced to the medal rounds for the second time in three years with a decision win over Iowa’s Fabian Harvey-McCuller, and will face Colorado-New Mexico’s Angelo Martinez in the semifinals. The winner of that fight will then face the winner of from the other bracket between Maximiliano Ruiz and Braylon Lane for the 143-pound title.

Martinez, 27, of Denver, Colorado is fighting for the first time at nationals, and entered the tournament with just 10 bouts to his name, according to USA Boxing’s match tracker. He advanced to the semis after three straight wins over Nehemiah Pee, Cody Wilson and Steven Ramirez.
The results weren’t as kind to the others. Jordan Simpson (165 pounds) was only able to match his 2024 quarterfinal exit as he lost a decision to Arizona resident Jonathan Ramos, while Quazir McLeod (121 pounds) dropped a decision to Chicago’s Michael Diaz-Mays and Dominic Lombardi (198 pounds) lost a decision to Washington D.C.’s John Purnell.
New Jersey’s two other boxers in the tournament, Eric Orr (154 pounds) and Erdis Lala (176 pounds) lost decisions on Monday.
