Keithland King scores first round KO of Likar Ramos in Colombia

After more than four years out of the ring, Keithland King has earned two wins in as many weeks.

The 36-year-old resident of Washington, N.J. scored a first round knockout of Likar Ramos on Saturday, Feb. 10 in Santa Marta, Colombia. The win, which came as the result of a body punch, was the second win in Colombia for the junior middleweight King (5-1, 5 knockouts), a native of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines who has spent the past month in Colombia working of ring rust as he prepares for his biggest test as a pro, a six-round bout with Jorge Tovar (7-0, 6 KOs) on March 1 at the County Coliseum in El Paso, Tex.

In King’s previous fight, he scored a third round TKO of Gustavo Sandoval in the same town.

The southpaw Ramos (30-17, 23 KOs), best remembered for his first round KO loss to Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez in 2011, bore almost no resemblance to his junior lightweight prime as his pudgy midsection poured over his waistband. King used his gut as a target, firing body punches with both hands. After a first knockdown which Ramos claims was behind the head, King put him down twice more with body punches before the fight was waved off.

“Me personally I know I am not where I should be. Still I’m happy with my performances as I yet still have a lot more to improve on,” said King, who has sparred with Colombian middleweight Alexander Castro (14-1, 11 KOs) while there.

“I have a few more days before my next fight in Texas where I am looking to bring back out that dog in me.”

King trains out of Old Dog Boxing Club in Ringoes, N.J.
