Malachi Georges advances to World Championships quarters with KO win

Whether on a New Jersey club show or on the biggest stage in amateur boxing, competing against Malachi Georges remains dangerous business.

The 22-year-old heavyweight from Teaneck, New Jersey scored a second round knockout of Hungary’s Levente Kiss on Monday to enter the quarterfinal stage of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England.

The southpaw Georges slipped inside an overhand right from Kiss to land a left hand to the body which the 23-year-old Kiss never saw, and never recovered from. The win was Georges’ second of the tournament, having shutout Estonia’s Stiven Aas on September 4.

Next up for Georges is Brazil’s Isaias Filho on September 10. The 23-year-old Filho won the World Boxing Cup in Kazakhstan in July and is coming off unanimous decisions over France’s Soheb Bouafia and Ukraine’s Bogdan Tolmachov to begin the tournament.

Georges is one of two New Jersey based boxers to represent USA Boxing at this tournament. Newark’s Ramon Ordonez competed in the 132-pound division, defeating Mexico’s Kevin Davila by unanimous decision before losing a 5-0 decision to Brazil’s Luiz Gabriel Oliveira on September 6.
