What a year it has been for Malachi Georges.

The 20-year-old southpaw from Teaneck, N.J. has won the National Golden Gloves and the New York Boxing Tournament, and topped it all off by winning the 203-pound U.S. Olympic Trials title on Saturday at the Cajundome in Lafayette, La.

Georges repeated his earlier win over Philadelphia’s Danel Brown, whom he beat in the National Golden Gloves final in May. Georges used his educated jab and footwork to win a 30-27 score on three cards, and a 29-28 score on the other two.

Georges had defeated Ali Monaghan, Kyree Brown Zellner and Derae Crane in previous rounds to get to the final.

“This is the cherry on top,” Georges, a veteran of 34 bouts, stated after the final.

“The hardest part is the training. Getting prepared is the hardest part. That is where I struggled. That is where the tears, blood, and not wanting to get up came from. I was excited about this; I almost couldn’t sleep. I was like a happy puppy and couldn’t wait to get in the ring.”

Georges will now try to overtake fellow New Jersey boxer Jamar Talley when the Team USA Selection Camp begins on January 7 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Col. USA Boxing will then decide which boxer will vie for a spot at the Paris Olympics.
