Malachi Georges scores third round stoppage of Juan Mausa in Copa America
Malachi Georges scored his second stoppage at the Copa America tournament on Thursday, stopping Colombia’s Juan Mausa in three rounds at Coliseo Centenario in Girardot, Colombia.
Georges, a 22-year-old from Teaneck, N.J., was aggressive from the opening bell, backing up Mausa and finding a home for his straight left hand. The southpaw forced three counts in the bout, each time punctuating his attacks with clean left hands that kept Mausa from settling into a rhythm.
The end came in the third round, when Georges pushed Mausa to the ropes and let his left hand fly. The sequence forced another count and the referee waved off the bout, giving Georges one of his most dominant wins of the tournament.
The victory improves Georges’ record to 4-1 in Copa America competition.
Earlier in the day, Tyric Trapp, USA Boxing’s 176-pound representative from Red Bank, N.J., sustained his first loss of the event, dropping a 4-1 decision to Noel Pacheco of the Dominican Republic.
