Tyric Trapp punishes Colombian foe, scores second round stoppage
Tyric Trapp showed he had a mean streak in him on Tuesday, pummeling Andres Orobio to a second round stoppage to improve to 3-0 in the Copa America tournament in Girardot, Colombia.
Trapp, a 26-year-old from Red Bank, N.J., sent his Colombian opponent reeling across the ring with a left-right combo, prompting the Colombian’s corner to stop the fight following the eight-count.
It was far from a lucky shot for the 176-pounder Trapp, who came out more aggressively with body punching and straight lefts which immediately put Orobio on the defensive. Trapp showed smart defense in close while ripping body shots that wore his opponent down, setting him up for the finish.
Malachi Georges, the 198-pounder from Teaneck, N.J., was scheduled to fight as well but earned the W by walkover against Guatemala’s Miguel Teo.
Bout sheets for Wednesday’s action have not yet been published.
The nine-day tournament is being contested in a round-robin format, with boxers facing every opponent in their division once. The boxer with the best overall record will claim the gold medal. The format allows all of the boxers to gain the maximum amount of experience while competing against boxers they may end up seeing at the Olympic qualifiers.
